Is Metal Roofing Right for Your Montana Home?
Metal Roofing Offers a Durable, Energy-Efficient, Timeless option for montana homes.
But is it right for you?
Why Choose Metal Roofing?
If you live in Missoula or anywhere across Western Montana, you know how demanding the weather can be. From heavy snow loads and ice in winter to summer sun and high winds, your roof needs to stand up to some serious abuse.
That’s why more and more homeowners and property managers are making the switch to metal roofing—a durable, efficient, and long-lasting option that’s perfectly suited to Montana’s climate.
Last year, we wrote a blog post explaining why every homeowner should upgrade to metal roofing if given the choice. We highlighted its exceptional durability, its ability to withstand harsh Montana weather, and the long-term cost savings thanks to improved energy efficiency and minimal maintenance.
We also touched on the aesthetic versatility of metal roofing—how it can complement anything from a rustic cabin to a modern build. But recently, we’ve had a few customers ask more detailed questions about the different types of metal roofing, how the installation process works, and whether it truly offers a return on investment.
We then went on to write another post – Metal Roofing vs Shingles Showdown – comparing the pros and cons of each.
At Western Montana Roofing, we are experts in precision-installed standing seam metal roofing systems, built for long-term performance and clean, modern aesthetics.
Here's Why Metal Should Be on Top (of Your List and Roof)
Whether you’re replacing an aging roof or building from the ground up, here’s why metal should be at the top of your list.
1. Montana-Tough Durability
Western Montana sees it all—snowstorms, hail, intense sun, freeze-thaw cycles, and plenty of wind. Metal roofing is uniquely suited to this climate. It holds up to:
- Heavy snow loads: Metal naturally sheds snow, which reduces weight on your structure and lowers the risk of ice dams.
- Wind and hail: With fewer seams and strong fastening systems, standing seam metal roofs hold tight in high winds and are impact-resistant.
- Moisture and pests: Metal doesn’t rot, mold, or invite critters like other materials can.
In short: it’s a roof built for longevity. While asphalt shingles may last 15–25 years with ideal care, a well-installed metal roof can often last 40–70 years, especially with regular inspections and minor maintenance.
2. Long-Term Value with Lower Maintenance
Metal roofs require less upkeep over time compared to shingles. No need to replace cracked or curling tabs, and no granule loss to worry about. Most of the maintenance comes down to basic debris removal and an occasional inspection.
And while metal roofing typically has a higher upfront cost, it often pays for itself over time. Fewer repairs, fewer replacements, and improved energy efficiency (more on that next) make it a smart long-term investment—especially in regions like Western Montana where the weather can be unforgiving.
3. Better Energy Efficiency Year-Round
It might surprise you, but metal roofing can actually reduce your energy bills. Here’s how:
In summer, reflective metal panels bounce back solar heat, helping your attic and home stay cooler.
In winter, proper underlayment and attic ventilation—both part of our install process—prevent heat loss and reduce the risk of condensation issues.
This means lower heating and cooling bills, and a more comfortable home year-round. It’s not just about performance—it’s about smart building.
4. Sleek Aesthetics That Add Curb Appeal
Today’s metal roofs are a far cry from the corrugated panels you might picture on old barns. Standing seam systems offer a sleek, architectural look that fits everything from modern homes to mountain cabins.
You’ll have plenty of color and finish options, and we’ll work with you to match the roof to your home’s design and surroundings. Want to make your home stand out in the neighborhood or on the market? A clean, modern metal roof can be a real selling point.

I would give Western Montana Roofing 10 stars if I could!
We got several bids to install a new metal roof on our house. Zack showed up the same day we called to ask for an estimate, physically inspected the roof and checked the trusses and soffits, put everything back and cleaned up after himself.
Some of the other roofing companies never even showed, and one submitted a bid $10,000 more than Zack’s without ever having seen or inspected the roof physically.
Zack was extremely accommodating about revising our bid when we wanted to switch to a higher gauge metal and add gutters. He was clear about anticipating problems that might occur once they opened the roof up and what the potential expenses might run us. He promised to fit us in within 2 months but actually started and finished the job within 1 month from when he gave us the bid. His crew were amazing and were extremely detail oriented, and their clean up was so thorough you never would have known they had been there. Throughout the process Zack kept in communication with us, letting us know when they would show up. As previously mentioned, when they opened up the roof, they found that most of the underlying panels were compromised and not in great shape. The estimate called for half of the panels to be replaced. Zack immediately called us to notify us of the situation and offered us several options. We chose to replace all of the panels and Zack went out of his way to give us a price break.
Throughout the bidding and construction process we were in constant contact with one of our sons who is an engineer and builder. He confirmed everything Zack said to us, ( he inspected the roof in April when he did some work on the house). We also sent pictures to him as the roof progressed and he was impressed by the quality of workmanship and the materials Zack was using.
Long story short, you definitely should hire Western Montana Roofing if you need work done on your roof. Especially, if you are considering a metal roof. Zack is an excellent communicator, straightforward and extremely easy to deal with. He does excellent work without trying to gouge you. Our experience with Western Montana Roofing and Zack has been extremely positive and we highly recommend them!!
